What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is an ancient science of health and healing. “Ayurveda,” a Sanskrit word, literally translates as science or knowledge of life.
According to Ayurvedic theory, the universe and everything in it is composed of five elements: Ether, or space, air, fire, water and earth.
These elements are represented in the body by three biological forces, known as doshas:
Vata – Ether and air
Pitta – Fire and water
Kapha – Water and earth
Each of us was born with a unique combination of these three doshas, known as our constitution. As we journey through our lives, our constitution may become imbalanced. Imbalances occur due to many factors, including diet, lifestyle choices and stress, just to name a few. A lifestyle in harmony with our constitution and environment leads to optimal heath, while a lifestyle that is not in harmony with our constitution and environment leads to imbalance, and ultimately, illness.
Ayurveda views a person’s health not just in physical terms, but considers the whole person – physically, mentally and spiritually. In addition, an Ayurveda treatment program seeks to address the source of an imbalance, rather than treating symptoms.
